All games run in Classic
Mode
and require a 256-color
setting.
The Fool synthesizer soundtrack
was lost and gone forever when Apple decided
to rewrite the Sound Manager with System
7. Dreadful sorry.
Depending on what Mac you have and
what system you are running, you may
have to do a slight tweak in the unzipping
process. Read on for suggestions from
other players.
If unzipped
.zip files appear as .txt,
you need to download the latest free version
of Stuff
it Expander.
Also, though a recent Macintosh version
of Stuffit Expander will expand the archive
correctly, the unzipping process may give
files in MacBinary format. If you rename
the files by adding ".bin" to
the end of the name, then "Stuffit
Expander 4.0.1" running within Mini
vMac can expand them. "MacBinary
II+ 1.0.2" also will work.
Intel Macintosh will not run Classic applications.
However, if you are technically inclined,
you might try the SheepShaver
emulator. Also, several people have reported
success with Mini
vMac.
A truly daring person might try to get the Windows XP Mac emulator Executor to run on the Intel Mac.
Michael did just that and he writes, “I do have an Intel-based Mac, and I struggled mightily to get Sheepsaver working on it, and ultimately failed in the attempt. However, I'm running Parallels on it (www.parallels.com) to emulate Windows XP at near-native speeds on my Mac. So I downloaded executor and lo and behold, now on my Mac, inside the Windows emulation I'm emulating an old Mac and can finally play the orignal Fool's errand again.”
Tiger runs the games... poorly... at least on my iMac. Earlier versions of OS X did work well, however.
Also, Bill Coderre
reports, “With ‘The Fool’s
Errand,’ you will need Stuffit Expander,
and for some reason, in Mac OS X Tiger,
the expanded files have incorrect names:
Fool’s
Puzzles.1 - Prologue & Finale.1 -
The Fool’s Errand.1
Remove the “.1” on these
files — and now the puzzles load
and things seem to work.” The same is true with 3 in Three
as well.
Panther
wants to automatically unzip the files
as they download. This will cause the
game to open to 60% and then stall. Instead
download the .zip files as is and expand
them with the latest free version of Stuff
it Expander. It allows a System
9 menu to access the Apple Menu Monitor
directly and set it to 256 colors.
OS X works in Classic mode. Launch The Fool’s Errand and then manually set the Monitors to 256 colors. This will allow you to get past the “256 Colors Needed” warning of At the Carnival and 3 in Three.
